Responsive Email Newsletter Design

fabio-carneiro

In this workshop, Fabio Carneiro, the creative mind behind HTML Newsletter Builder at MailChimp, presents clever techniques and strategies for building and testing responsive HTML email newsletters, optimize user experience in mail clients and ensuring that the newsletters get through the spam filters. If you need to know the tips and tricks for responsive newsletter design, this workshop is just what you need.

Responsive Web Design isn't limited to websites - it's also possible in HTML email, and every bit as necessary.

HTML email is an integral part of the web. In this workshop, you'll learn how to build a full-featured, responsive HTML email from scratch. Using an email-friendly combination of HTML and CSS, along with media queries, you'll design an effective, flexible email that's fit for anything from desktops and mobile devices, regardless of the content you need to send.

The problem is that by default HTML newsletters look horrible on mobile devices. Let's fix that.

What will you learn?

In this workshop, Fabio will teach you how to:

  • Get started with email design by mastering the basics of the craft,
  • Develop great-looking emails using limited HTML and CSS,
  • Build your own email framework using common design patterns,
  • Properly test and troubleshoot your email in a variety of clients,
  • Apply user experience techniques to create emails people actually want to read.

This workshop is hands-on and messy; throw caution to the wind and forget (most of) what you know about standards-based web-design: you'll get deep into code and development techniques in order to build a good working knowledge of table-based responsive email design. Comfort with HTML and CSS is recommended. Bring a laptop and, if you can, a mobile device (phone or tablet).

What hardware/software do you need?

Please bring your own laptop (Mac or Win) with your favorite text editor.

Location

The workshop will be taking place on Monday, June 16th, at the Lighthouse International venue (Lighthouse International, 111 E 59th St, New York NY 10022-1202, Google Maps). No printing necessary — just bring your ID! The doors open at 8am.
