Schedule

Meets August 23, 2022.

All our Meets events are nice, interactive and (hopefully 😻) interesting. Our upcoming Meets Data should help you understand how you can use data to make your stories, projects and work a bit nicer and better.

We have a few amazing speakers for you. We’ll start with Han will take us through her work process, from deciding on what stories to visualise, through collection the right data to actually visualizing them. After that Condé Nast’s Lily Boyce will show us that DataViz is much more prevalent in web design than we generally think, and what you can do to make the most out of this. We’ll end with an interactive panel.

We open our virtual doors 15 minutes before we start on Tuesday,August 23, 2022 at 8 AM PT 🌍 and we’ll finish around 11 AM.

🛸 8 AM — Seattle (WS)
🚘 11 AM — Detroit (MI)
🍫 5 PM — Antwerp
🍜 10 PM — Bangkok

We love it when our speakers do live things: they show how they work — their setup, techniques and shortcuts for getting work done in live interactive sessions. So you can learn from their techniques (and mistakes).

Vitaly, the one who loves ironing, front-end, UX and has tons of crazy ideas.

Welcome!

For our upcoming Smashing Meets event on Dta-Vizualization, our friendly host(s) will welcome you and quickly explain how the Meets will run. We can’t wait to meet you!

8:10 AM

Visualising News

As the world increasingly seems to get more complex, and more and more information is becoming available, DataViz has gradually become an important element in news reporting. In this talk, Han — who works for one of Hong Kong's leading newspapers — will go into her work process and the tools she and other graphic journalists using to create visual storytelling.

8:50 AM

Hidden Data Viz

Not all data visualizations look like data visualizations. Many of our projects may not look very data-y, but look under the hood and it’s there. It's all about using data to communicate ideas that may not be obvious targets for visualization (e.g. suggest music you may like, help you pick an outfit for that wedding, find recipes tailored to your pantry, and create a customized Thanksgiving). In this talk, Condé Nast's Lily Boyce will show how to recognise opportunities to visualise content with data, and how to do that effectively.

9:30 AM

FigJam Data Challenge

Closing up, the speakers and hosts do a little interactive DataViz challenge in FigJam, and answer your questions whilst you are at it!

9:55 AM

Goodbye!

What? The End? Noooos! But hopefully some of your questions are answered, and we have made sure you will ask some new ones. Luckily there is always the videos, the slides, the collaborative docs, and more. We’ll send them your way shortly. Thank you for joining us & see you again soon! ⛱
