When we think of accessibility, we think about usual suspects — the color contrast, legible font sizes, mobile tap targets. However, accessibility isn’t a checklist.

To design inclusive experiences, we need to consider motion sensitivity, neurodiversity, people with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, left-handed people — and know how to better design for children, teenagers and older adults. So, how do we do that?

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for interface designers, front-end designers and developers who’d love to learn about to accessibility & inclusive design and UX. You’ll walk away with a toolbox of techniques and examples of doing things well — in your product, website, desktop app or mobile app.

What hardware/software do you need?

You don’t need specific hardware or software for this workshop. Vitaly will show and share specific tools and sites via the collaborative doc. You do need to bring a critical and inquisitive mind and plenty of energy. Vitaly’s workshops are always full of new and fast paced information, so you’ll need a good cup of coffee (or tea — we don’t judge :)) for this one!

Vitaly Friedman loves beautiful content and doesn’t like to give in easily. When he is not writing or speaking at a conference, he’s most probably running front-end/UX workshops and webinars. He loves solving complex UX, front-end and performance problems.

Day 1: State of Accessibility 2025

Most frequent accessibility challenges in small and large companies, legislation, European Accessibility Act (EAA), WCAG 2.2, ARIA. How to read and apply accessibility guidelines, how to test for accessibility and how to debug accessibility, differences between inclusive design and accessibility.

Day 2: Accessible UI Components

Designing accessible UI components and flows — accessibility considerations for colors, fonts, interaction, navigation, search, filters, tables, forms, drag-and-drop, error messages, charts, live regions. How to deal with authentication, CAPTCHA and how to support and empower screen reader users.

We’ll also explore useful features such as skip links, focus rings, navigation landmarks, reduced motion and preferred color schemes.

Day 3: Neurodiversity and Inclusive UX

How to design inclusive experiences with neurodiversity in mind — for people with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, colorblindness, left-handedness, motion sickness, mental health issues and for people who are hard of hearing.

We’ll also study things to keep in mind when designing for various user groups — children, teenagers, young adults, Gen-Z, LGTBQI-friendly UX, designing for older adults and multi-lingual cross-cultural audiences.

We’ll also touch on inclusive photography, iconography and UX writing.

Day 4: Designing For Disabilities & Building an Accessibility Case

How to design for permanent, temporary and situational disabilities. Types of input devices and how they are operated. How to design for stress, anxiety, emergency and time pressure — but also exceptions and “edge cases”.

We’ll also explore how to build a strong case for accessibility from scratch, the challenges of patch solutions like accessibility overlays, how to embed accessibility in the product lifecycle (along with tooling), and how to establish an accessibility research practica.

We’ll conclude with a strategy to set up and follow through with the accessibility practice, and also how to spread, measure, track and report the impact of accessibility efforts.
