The Chroma Zone: Engineering Color on the Web

We use color every day, but how well do we really understand it? More often than not, we are merely scratching the surface of a large and complicated discipline. In this dynamic session, we will scratch a little deeper, and you will be surprised at how deep the colorful rabbit hole goes.

How does color work on our screens? What’s the difference between color models and color spaces? Which existing features of CSS Color are we underutilizing? What’s in store for CSS Color level 4? How can we pick both aesthetically pleasing and accessible color combinations?

This is not a design talk, it’s a technical talk about the inner workings of one of the most important design aspects, with many practical takeaways. Whether you identify as a designer or a developer, you will walk out of this session with a newfound confidence about anything color related.

Psychology and The Perfect Design

In this talk, Joe will take you on a journey to find the holy grail we are all looking for: the "perfect" design. We'll look at a practical strategy that uses psychology to produce the ideal design for those tricky user experience design problems we face everyday.

What exactly is the perfect design? Well, that's what you will find out in the session. We'll look at the three aspects that define the perfect design and how you can make it work in your projects.

Real-Life Responsive Web Design: Lessons Learned

The Web is neither black nor white. Usually, as designers and developers, we need to come up with pragmatic solutions that work best within given constrains, and they often look very differently from what optimal solutions are supposed to be. In this talk, David Rupert will look back into the project that he’s worked on at Paravel Inc. and present insights into the techniques, strategies and workflow for mid-size and large responsive design projects.

Putting Your Images on a Diet

Images are quickly becoming one of the most critical factors for web performance. On one hand, users are demanding more visual websites, driving an increase in the number of images on a page and making background images cool again. On the other hand, technology trends such as Retina displays and RWD are making it much harder to choose the right image to download at any given time, avoiding the download of excess bytes.

In this talk, we'll talk about what you can do to maximize the impact of every image byte. We'll explain the concept of Image Compression, understand how it applies to different image formats, and show the tools and techniques you should use to communicate the best visuals with the fewest bytes. Lastly, we'll show how to combine image compression and Retina displays, and discuss some newer image formats and how you can take advantage of them today.

Hard-Won Lessons in Responsive Email Design

Email is one of the most important ways you can connect with your audience. With the majority of people now reading email on mobile devices, creating robust responsive templates is no longer optional — it's the new standard practice. Unfortunately, email design is still considered a dark art, and its steep learning curve can be daunting. In this talk, Fabio will present techniques for designing and developing email along with strategies for optimizing user experience in email clients that make the task more simple and less frustrating.

Digital Adaptation — Time To Untie Your Hands

Do you feel like you are doing your job with one hand tied behind your back? Are you frustrated by company practices that are horribly antiquated and inappropriate for the digital world? Does your boss or client fail to understand the unique characteristics of the web? If so, you are not alone. The majority of traditional businesses are struggling to adapt to the digital economy and need your help even if they don't realize it.

In his talk, Paul explains why this is, and what we (as the web community) can do about it. He highlights that to build a great website, we have to be the catalyst for organizational change and recommends ways to start make it happening.

Things you will learn include:

  • Why so many organisations are failing to adapt.
  • Why it falls to you to instigate the change in company culture.
  • Practical ways of instigating change.
  • Why your primary job isn't to build websites, despite what your boss or client might think.

Mind the Gap: Designing in the Space Between Devices

There's untapped magic in the gaps between gadgets. Multi-screen design is a preoccupying problem as we try to fit our content into many different screens. But as devices multiply, the new opportunity is less about designing individual screens but designing interactions between them—often without using a screen at all. Learn to create web and app experiences that share control among multiple devices, designing not only for screens but for sensors. The technology is already here in our pockets, handbags, and living rooms. Learn how to use it right now.
