Git, the widely popular version control tool that just about everyone who works on the web seems to use, is powerful, scalable, flexible… and difficult to learn. Even if you use Git every day, you’ve probably gotten yourself into some confusing, frustrating, or downright terrifying situations. Don’t panic, You are not alone!


In this workshop, Katie Sylor-Miller, the creator of OhShitGit.com, will teach you everything you need to know to take your Git knowledge to the next level.

You’ll gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental data structures that power Git, and what all of those commands you type into the terminal actually do under the hood.

You’ll learn how to improve your Git workflow and avoid common pitfalls:

  • Better strategies for collaboration, branching, merging, and staying up to date,
  • Reducing the panic caused by rebases and merge conflicts,
  • Using advanced commands to navigate your repo,
  • And tips, tricks, and tools to improve your productivity

Finally, you’ll learn how to leverage Git’s powerful features to diagnose and fix your mistakes. You’ll leave feeling confident and comfortable when using Git!

About Katie Sylor-Miller

Katie is a Staff Software Engineer on the Front-end Systems team at Etsy, where she advocates for and implements front-end best practices in collaboration with product engineers and designers. She is passionate about front-end architecture, design systems, accessibility, front-end performance, and teaching others.

Katie co-authored the Design Systems Handbook, but her proudest accomplishment is creating OhShitGit.com to share her hard-won knowledge of how to get out of your git messes with a bit of humor (and a lot of swears).

This full-day workshop will be hosted at Fort Mason and will take place the day after SmashingConf. The workshop will be running from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM on Thursday, April 18th.
