    Building Semantic First HTML Email

    Full-day in-person workshop • Tue, May 23, 2023.
For years HTML email has been the bane of many front-end developers' lives. As web technologies have moved on, email has seemingly been left behind, with many developers opting to “code like it’s 1999”. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

In this workshop, we’ll look at building HTML email from a different perspective, semantic first. Starting with basic unstyled semantic HTML, we’ll look at how we can build on that to create modern emails with beautiful designs, while maintaining accessibility. We’ll also look at how we can scale our work to cut down on build times, leaving more room to add some fun enhancements giving us a modern look and feel to our emails.

    New Front-End Adventures, 2023 Edition

    Full-day in-person workshop • Tue, May 23, 2023.
With HTTP/3, Service Workers, Jamstack, PWA, TypeScript, Web Assembly, AVIF, Qwik, Variable Fonts, CSS Container Queries and cascade layers, client hints, resource hints and early hints and CSS subgrid, we all are still trying to figure out just the right strategy for building websites and apps efficiently. How do we do that, and how do we achieve it within a reasonable amount of time?

What’s the state of CSS and JavaScript today? What are some of the exciting new technologies that have landed in browsers recently? How do we architect a flexible and maintainable design system? And where would we even start refactoring and re-organizing our legacy code base, or move to ES Modules in production, or use Web workers or Webassembly? Oh my, in the workshop, we’ll cover it all.

Accessible Components from Design to Development

    Full-day in-person workshop • Fri, May 26, 2023.
Digital accessibility is the practice of making products — such as websites and apps — accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities. But accessibility is often an afterthought at the end of a project when a user submits a bug or when legal issues arise — if it is thought of at all.

In this workshop, Carie will walk through the process of creating accessible front-end components from design to development. Throughout the workshop sessions, we will rely on accessibility best practices/guidelines and utilize testing tools and techniques at each step of the product development lifecycle.

    Boosting Web Performance in 2023

    Full-day in-person workshop • Fri, May 26, 2023.
Even heavy, framework-driven, legacy-haunted apps can get into the green Core Web Vitals and great Lighthouse scores. With partial hydration, critical rendering, clean CSS architecture, Qwik, AVIF, service workers, web workers, predictive prefetching and a dash of client hints, resource hints and early hints, we just need to apply the right performance strategy to get there.

So how do we do that? Let’s figure out the best way to compress text, optimize images, manage web fonts, streamline delivery of CSS/JS, deal with caching and CORS issues, and deliver and contain third-party scripts. We’ll explore ways to refactor and re-organize our legacy code base, and how and when to use Web workers and Webassembly. Oh my, in the workshop, we’ll cover it all.
