  • Tea and Coffee
  • Lunch
  • Paper and pen/pencil

Full-day workshop • Monday, June 24
In this workshop you’ll explore the new features available for CSS Layout with CSS Working Group Invited Expert Rachel Andrew. Learn the emerging best practices for using Grid and Flexbox. Discover how to support browsers without support, and ensure that our new powers don’t lead to us causing accessibility problems.

She’ll also be taking a look at how the web is moving away from physical dimensions – mapping layout to the top, right, bottom and left of the physical screen – to using logical properties and values. By the end of the day you will have a better understanding of how layout works, and have plenty of code examples and resources to use as a reference as you start to implement these techniques in your work.

This will be a workshop full of practical things to use right now, as well as a glimpse into the things you’ll be using very soon. Bring your CSS Layout questions, as Rachel is always very happy to help you figure out those places where you and your team are struggling.

We’ll be writing CSS all day, and this workshop does assume existing HTML and CSS knowledge. However whether you are a fulltime front-end developer, or someone who usually works elsewhere in the stack and wants to bring your CSS knowledge right up to date, there will be something for you.

What you’ll learn:

  • The specifications that make up our new CSS Layout system - Flexbox, Grid, Box Alignment, and Sizing
  • How Sizing works in CSS Layout
  • Logical rather than physical dimensions (alignment will make more sense!)
  • Best practices for new layout
  • Browser support and testing
  • What new things are landing very soon

What prerequisites skills do you need?

Basic understanding of CSS and JavaScript.

What hardware/software do you need?

Please bring your own laptop (Mac or Win) with your favorite text editor.
